The Electric Junk. My Zonk Machine. Years of work. Hundreds built. For players in their homes. For the players on the stage.
The original Zonk. Germanium. Three transistors. Designed after the Tonebender MkI. Made for a short time in the sixties. My version is different. A switch for tone, three ways. Two trims inside. For gain. They are important. When the heat comes, the gain goes up. Germanium transistors feel the heat. I pick the transistors for gain. For leakage. Not for their name. They may not look the same.
The Zonk. Not common. It has a voice. From a soft buzz, like reeds, to full gain. Almost an overdrive. Always a gate at the end of the notes. Not like a Fuzz Face. It will not clean with the guitar volume. But it sustains. Holds the note when it should die.
Once, many shapes and many sizes. Now, only this compact shape. A variety of colours, hand-printed, two colours, on three sides. That is all.
